Author, Editor, OlympianPrimary MenuBook Comment: Where the Crawdad SingPosted onAuthor I have never started a post with a direct order, but I am now doing it: BUY THIS BOOK. My reaction to where the Sing Crawdads were so intensely personal, made me ask myself (again): Why do some books consume me, so when I look up the reading I have to consciously refocus to regain any sense of where I really am? What kept me reading through an entire weekend, neglecting other more urgent duties? I don't have all the answers, but here are some of the elements that make this an incredibly satisfactory reading. Localization "Marsh is not swamp", states the first sentence, somehow making it implying exactly the opposite for this ocean-sal-air-love. Do not take the image of the deck too literally; a beetle with an old outboard is the main source of the character's transport. Kya Clark, known to the people as the girl of the swamps, could not live anywhere else; around her house, "so harsh blade smiles" are "interrupted only by trees so steep that they bore the shape of the wind." At every level, this story could have taken place exactly where it is set. StructureAfter a single opening paragraph established in 1969 that unhinderedly reveals a dead body, they take us back to 1952 to meet Kya as a girl — in the morning of "August-hot" his Ma is leaving forever. A brief approach shows the larger image, this swamp is guarded by the salty open waters of the Atlantic Cemetery, before returning to a girl sitting on a front porch, waiting for her mother to return. His exact location in the world does not care about Kya, so the author Delia Owens focuses on lyric descriptions of birds and frogs, swamp herbs and palmets; the only world our heroine knows. So, just as we're getting settled, we're abruptly pulled out of the head of a six-year-old boy and again forward towards 1969 and the identification of that body. He's a local football hero just beyond his first, we learn, and the sheriff smells bad game. History ranges between these two very different realities, without explanation of how they could be connected. And yet we know—KNOW—that they must be. Trust That uncertain certainty made me strive to hear what was left without saving for the characters, and to make connections between what was revealed in each segment. Owens trusts her readers, and that's why we trust her; even when she focused my attention on such difficult scenes and, however, at the same time as impressive, it was as if she was also sitting on my shoulder, promising: "just keep reading; everything will be revealed." A straight line from beginning to end would not have caught my attention almost so well. Cara I like to think that Kya is based on a real person; that it will be one of the many research projects that this chispa book, once I finish trying to convince you of BUY THIS BOOK. I wish I had met her, although the odds of that would have been thin at all; she rarely left the belly and kept away from people. His wisdom is born of reading, full of curiosity, observation and poetry. And, like her few friends and many enemies, there is much more going on within her than we realize. Deep TwistsMany of the books I read are predictable but pleasant. This was nothing more than anything, and yet my only teen nitpick is not with writing, but with the image of the deck (Kya belongs in a crunchy beetle, shaken in the hand, not padding a bright canoe). Yes, there is an indifferent love, but there is also desertion, abuse, and much more people who think our main character is an ignorant Marsh Girl who friends who believe in her as we do. The story kept surprising, even the last scene. Just read I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to live and breathe a world now lost by air conditioning and air conditioning. There are both below the surface and in the plain view: prejudice, development, education, love and loss, but everything is hidden under a damn good story, woven around descriptions as rich as Kya's first night on her own was alone: At first, every few minutes, she sat and looked through the screen. Listening to steps in the woods. She knew the forms of all the trees; still some seemed to daring here and there, moving with the moon. For a while she was so rigid that she couldn't swallow, but in cue, the family songs of tree frogs and the katydids filled the night. More comforting than three blind mice with a carved knife. The darkness had a sweet smell, the earthly breath of frogs and salamanders who had done it through a more stinking day. The swamp moved closer to a low fog, and slept. More media I have heard the version, but I plan to buy a copy of text as well, partly to compare the two forms of "read" and partly to the joy of re- immersed in the world of Crawdads. (Note to yourself: Don't start reading unless there are no chords that end with a tight deadline.) The rights of the film have already been assured, and I am sure that the film will be very memorable too, although I wonder where the producers will find enough Marshy desert to film. But before someone else imparts the "mirate" of this world on the big screen, I suggest you see it on the screen between your ears. So I end up as this started, with one instruction: BUY THIS BOOK. Have you read? Where are the Crawdads? Do you still have to wait? (Insert jealous emoji here.) Either way, share your thoughts in the comments below, or leave me one. Thank you for reading!
